Improved facilities
The 2011 race will be the first time that the Moto GP series has used Silverstone’s new $44 million pit and paddock complex. The new facilities have been constructed alongside Hangar Straight, where Nigel Mansell and Nelson Piquet had their famous wheel banging incident in the F1 race at the venue in 1987. This is on the opposite side of the track to the old facilities and will therefore completely transform the first lap due to the vastly different configuration of the opening sector of the circuit.

The new facilities have been greeted with universal acclaim, with 1993 Indy car champion Nigel Mansell claiming that it re-affirms Silverstone’s reputation as being a great place for the race: “This track is the best in the world for me bar none. The crowd gets behind the driver if there’s a sniff of a win.”

Valentino Rossi was also present at the launch event for the new facilities, completing a number of demonstration laps on his Ducati machine. The nine times World Champion missed last years race due to injury and therefore can not wait for his first proper taste of the historic venue: “I’m very excited because I had a toe injury so I had to watch the race from the television but it was not the same and so I decided to come here and see the track because all the other drivers say it is good and fast. I can’t wait for the grand prix.”

Let battle commence
Like much of the 2010 Moto GP championship, last years British race was dominated by eventual Champion Jorge Lorenzo on his Yamaha. However, he faces a much tougher challenge in 2011 thanks to Honda, who have produced what is arguably the best package in the field. This has allowed the 2007 World Champion Casey Stoner to take the fight to Lorenzo in the championship, as he current sits just 12 points behind the Yamaha rider.

Spectators at the event will also be treated to the sight of a very determined Valentino Rossi battling against the odds on his underperforming Ducati. The Italian will be looking to take his first win of the season at a circuit he is expected to enjoy. It is set to be a thrilling event, so make sure that you don’t miss out.
