Manchester United almost there

Manchester United have all but won the 2010/11 Premier League title after the Red Devils beat closest rivals Chelsea 2-1 at Old Trafford on Sunday. Chelsea needed to win to have a realistic chance of retaining their title, but fell behind within a matter of seconds as Javier Hernandez stroked home the opener. Nemanja Vidic doubled Man United’s lead midway through the first half and although Chelsea came back after the break, a solitary Frank Lampard goal wasn’t enough.

Man United now need just a point from either of their remaining two games against Blackburn or Blackpool to secure yet another domestic title. They are also just one match away from a potential double, after United wrapped up a comfortable 6-1 aggregate semi-final victory against Schalke. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men will face Barcelona at Wembley in the Champions League final at the end of this month, and will have to complete arguably the most difficult task in European football; silencing Lionel Messi.

Back in the Premier League, Wolves lifted themselves out of the relegation zone with an invaluable three points at home to West Brom. That win meant Mick McCarthy’s men leapfrogged Blackpool, who earned a draw away to Tottenham, Wigan, who also drew 1-1 away at Wigan, and West Ham, who are now rooted to the bottom of the table after being held to a draw against Blackburn at Upton Park.

Ahead of the FA Cup final next week, Stoke got a confidence boosting win against Arsenal at the Britannia Stadium, while, in contrast, Manchester City fell to defeat against Everton at Goodison Park. Elsewhere Newcastle beat Birmingham 2-1 at St James’ Park and Sunderland secured victory by the same score line away at Bolton. Tonight, Liverpool travel to Fulham, knowing that three points will greatly improve their chances of qualifying for Europe.

The regular season of the Championship was finished on Saturday, with QPR being crowned champions after escaping a points deduction in the FA trial over the purchase of Alejandro Faurlin. There was relief for another London club after final day drama in League Two, with Barnet escaping relegation from the Football League as they leapfrogged the unfortunate Lincoln City.
