Arsenal help out their London rivals

Arsenal did London rivals Chelsea a huge favour in the Premier League title race on Sunday by beating Manchester United 1-0 at The Emirates Stadium. The result means that Chelsea are now within touching distance of Man United, sitting just three points behind and with a crucial tie between the Blues and United at Old Trafford next weekend, it’s certainly all to play for at the top of the table.

The match at The Emirates on Sunday was a tight affair, although Arsenal will feel they did enough to win as they dominated possession for large periods. After a penalty was controversially not awarded against Nemanja Vidic despite a blatant hand ball, the Gunners took the lead through a move that Aaron Ramsey started and finished, which was enough to earn all three points.

Chelsea’s victory against Tottenham at Stamford Bridge on Saturday was equally controversial. Spurs took the lead through a stunning Sandro strike, before Chelsea equalised after Heurelho Gomes let Frank Lampard’s shot squirm past him, but TV replays clearly showed that the ball didn’t cross the line. The Blues pushed for a winner and eventually got it in the dying moments as Salomon Kalou tapped in from close range, but the Ivorian was just offside.

Elsewhere in the Premier League, Manchester City all but secured Champions League qualification for next season with a far from convincing 2-1 victory against West Ham at Eastlands. Liverpool now lie behind City in 5th after easing past Newcastle 3-0 at Anfield, while Fulham and West Brom both secured notable wins away to Sunderland and home to Aston Villa respectively.

In the battle to avoid the drop, Blackburn got a massive three points at home to Bolton. Blackpool could only manage a goalless draw against Stoke at Bloomfield Road, while Wigan were held to a 1-1 draw at home to Everton. Wolves were unable to take advantage against Birmingham who played with ten men for large periods, again drawing 1-1 as the games slip away.

In the Championship, Norwich joined QPR in sealing automatic promotion as the Football League season nears the play-off stage. Finally, in the Champions League, Manchester United and Barcelona look like meeting in the final at Wembley, as both won 2-0 away at Schalke and Real Madrid respectively in the first leg, with Lionel Messi lighting up the tie at the Bernabeu with an extraordinary individual effort.
