A great weekend for Manchester

It was all about Manchester at the weekend, as firstly Man United won their 19th top flight title by securing the Premier League crown, then Man City ended their 35 year wait for a trophy as they lifted the FA Cup. The weekend’s results have set the foundation for a Manchester rivalry that looks set to take place on the domestic and European stage for a number of years to come.

Manchester United’s task was relatively straightforward; all they needed was a point against Blackburn. However, Sir Alex Ferguson’s men made hard work of it, as United fell behind and needed a second half penalty from Wayne Rooney to secure the draw and in turn the title. United’s focus will now switch to the Champions League final at Wembley at the end of the month, where Barcelona stand between them and yet another double.

Manchester City’s game was equally hard fought, as they came up against a tough Stoke side at Wembley. City were on top for large periods of the match and after David Silva squandered a couple of good chances, one in each half, it was left to Yaya Toure to smash home the winner in the second half. It wasn’t a classic, but Man City and Roberto Mancini won’t care one jot.

This weekend will also be remembered by West Ham fans, but for all the wrong reasons, as the Hammers’ relegation from the Premier League was confirmed. West Ham started well at the DW Stadium, with a Demba Ba brace giving them a first half lead, but Wigan fought back to win 3-2 thanks to a late Charles N’Zogbia goal and improved their own chances of avoiding the drop.

Wigan face a fight with Blackpool, who earned an invaluable three points with a 4-3 win against Bolton at Bloomfield Road; Birmingham, who fell to a 2-0 defeat at home to Fulham; Wolves who won 3-1 away at Sunderland; and Blackburn. Two from five will go down, and next Sunday promises to be exciting and nerve-biting for all those teams involved.

Elsewhere in the Premier League Aston Villa earned a credible 2-1 win away to Arsenal, Newcastle fought hard to secure a 2-2 draw away at Chelsea, Tottenham won 2-0 at Anfield against Liverpool and West Brom won 1-0 at home to Everton. Finally, north of the border, Rangers secured the SPL title as they thumped Kilmarnock 5-1.
