Manchester United on the brink

Manchester United moved a step closer to yet another Premier League title after beating Everton 1-0 at Goodison Park on Saturday. Sir Alex Ferguson’s men were made to work hard for their victory as they did not break the deadlock until the final ten minutes of the match, with Mexican striker Javier Hernandez scoring the all-important goal.

Man United’s closest challengers for the title are now Chelsea, with the Blues easing past West Ham 3-0 at Stamford Bridge. The match was notable for Fernando Torres ending his incredibly long goal scoring drought to net his first goal for Chelsea since moving in January. In all likelihood Arsenal are now out of the title race, after Arsene Wenger’s men’s poor form continued as they fell to a 2-1 defeat against Bolton at The Reebok Stadium.

Elsewhere the battle to avoid relegation is still well and truly on, with Blackburn being pulled further into trouble after losing 1-0 at Ewood Park against Champions League qualification chasing Manchester City. Blackpool moved out of the relegation zone with a 1-1 draw at home to Newcastle, but Ian Holloway’s men are still bang in trouble and have much work to do.

The bottom three in the Premier League now consists of Wigan, who lost 4-2 away to Sunderland, Wolves who were held 1-1 by Fulham at Molineux, and West Ham who are in desperate need of three points sooner, rather than later. Birmingham still aren’t safe after being hammered 5-0 at Anfield against a resurgent Liverpool, who themselves are hot on the heels of Tottenham after Spurs were held 2-2 at White Hart Lane against West Brom.

This week Man United are back in action in the Champions League as they travel to Germany to face Schalke in the first leg of the semi final. The third of four matches between Real Madrid and Barcelona at the Santiago Bernabeu makes up the other semi. An important week for United is rounded off with a trip to London to face Arsenal at The Emirates Stadium.
